Located between the covered market and the Old Port, Le Tout du Cru serves up seafood at its very best. No fuss – here, you eat fresh, local produce. Choose from twelve varieties of oysters, delivered every morning by the producers. You can order them on a platter, as part of a mixed platter or à la carte, accompanied by charcuterie and cheese, as well as a fine selection of wines. The atmosphere is relaxed, with mismatched tables. A place we’d recommend without hesitation. Do remember to book – the dining room isn’t very big.

This one needs a bit of explaining, because the concept always takes people by surprise. La Gerbe de Blé is a bar and restaurant situated outside the market halls. You order a glass of white wine to suit your mood, and you’re given a tray so you can choose your own seafood directly from the producers from the Île de Ré in the market halls: best price guaranteed! You return to your table, where you’ll be served bread, salted butter and a fine local white wine.
The market has a typically local atmosphere; in the late morning between 12 noon and 1.30 pm, tables fill up very quickly, so make sure you arrive early.

On the charming Place de la Fourche, Le Panier de Crabes is a spot that seems to be known only to those in the know. Recommended by Gault & Millau, it serves seafood platters of impeccable freshness. On the terrace, in the shade of a large tree, the ritual of enjoying the platter becomes almost ceremonial. To be savoured at a leisurely pace.
